When we speak of what is and what is supposed to be, we’re saying that reality and expectations differ. Reality is something that we can see and feel, and it’s what we actually have. Reality has a way of changing though. It can change as we grow older, as we learn more, as we experience life.
Expectations are our own desires. They’re what we want to happen. They’re what we think should be the case.
That’s why expectations are often so unrealistic. When you expect something to be great, you put so much pressure on yourself to get what you want that it actually becomes awful once you have it. But when you expect something to be bad, it becomes good because you get so much out of being disappointed in the way things turn out.
Whenever someone tells you that something is great or awful, just remember that expectations are not reality.
